Joint Project Studio Images

New Era Joker

These are some of my raw images (before being composited into a layout) from the joint assignment between the Graphic Design and Commercial Photography concentrations.

Design kids come up with the idea and layout that's "photo heavy," then create four separate advertising pieces, and photokids do the photography.

These images will be used for a full page magazine ad layout and in-store poster layout.

PAK Slide Viewer
made by Le Belle Industries
Oconomowoc, Wis.

It holds 8 mounted slides that it ratchets-out onto a small groundglass, that sits below an adjustable loop, that folds inside the body. The mechanism is simple, pulling the silver tap returns the current slide to the bottom of the stack inside the "clip," pushing the silver tab back in loads whatever slide is on top of the stack into viewing position. the viewer can point the groundglass at any nearby light source to illuminate the slide. There is a switch on the bottom of the device that allows the silver tab to be completely removed in order to load/unload slides.

It's a clever little device, but I imagine designed to handle slides mounted on more sturdy material. If the slide is not sitting correctly on the ground glass it can jam as it's returned to the "clip," resulting in bent mounts and/or slide damage.

This is the image being viewed through the loop.

Jewelry

Watch

Commercial photography group assignment #4: Jewelry
-split into groups of 3 0r 4
-pick a wrist watch
-decide on a basic composition
-light well
-each member turn-ins separate image

I'm not 100% keen on this image. I was going for something a little different from the rest of my group. I went more straight-on, going for a more direct geometric composition. But I ended up with much flatter lighting with a lot less depth and dimension compared to the rest of my group.

Lighting:
-strobe-head with standard bowl reflector at 8:30 slightly above, through cloth scrim
-strobe-head with standard bowl reflector at 3:00 slightly above, through semi-translucent, textured plexi/plastic
-white reflectors below and above subject
-glass watch face flagged off with small black gobo/flag
-Photoshop:
---separate contrast adjustment layer masking for overall image, watch face, and ring around watch face
---iridescent areas brought-out through masked Hue/Saturation adjustment layer

Photography Illustration assignment
Client #5: Model Composite

-create 10 portraits for a "model"
-show variety in location, dress, posing, expression, composition, etc

I wasn't able to reserve proper equipment to shoot this to my liking. While I'm happy with the images I turned-in, I wanted more than just on-location/outdoor images, at least a few studio-esque shots using strobes with softboxes/umbrellas. Plus, my poor little-ol' Rebel XT is not quite up-to-task for the kind of quality and clarity I'd like. I will (re)shoot this again soon.

Assignment: Breakfast

My take on it: "Breakfast on the Go"

Breakfast On The Go

-Nikon D300
-Nikon AF 24-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens
-Broncolor Opus power pack
---main strobe feathered over passenger side door/window with amber gel
---amber gelled snoot through windshield onto cup and pop tart
---non-gelled sofbox filling back window

Commercial Photography Assignment: Client #1 Breakfast
-photograph "breakfast"
-show time and place
-shoot in studio

Everyone else in my class shot really nice table top breakfast scenes, but I decided to go with something different; a more realistic, less idealistic breakfast: coffee and a pop tart.

I'm not totally satisfied with the shot, but I was surprised by mostly positive comments during critique.
